What is the difference between a competent person and an authorized person?

OSHA 1926.32 defines an authorized person as someone the employer approves or assigns to a specific duty or location on the jobsite. A competent person can identify existing and predictable hazards and has the employer's authority to correct them right away. Under OSHA's fall protection rule, a competent person must train workers exposed to fall hazards.
