TDLR's fiscal year 2025 exam statistics show a 27.52% pass rate for the Texas journeyman electrician exam. The two portions TDLR has used since March 2025 passed at lower rates, with 24.46% of NEC Knowledge attempts and 20.56% of Calculations attempts passing.
The PSI exam fee is $78 for both portions, per the PSI candidate information bulletin. If you fail one portion or both, the retake fee is $78. TDLR charges a separate $30 non-refundable application fee.
The exam is open book, and since September 1, 2026, it's referenced to the 2026 NEC. Bring a soft-bound copy, which can be highlighted, underlined and annotated ahead of time and tabbed with permanent publisher tabs. Loose-leaf, spiral-bound and ring-bound books, the NEC Handbook and homemade tabs aren't allowed.
The exam has two portions. NEC Knowledge has 59 questions, 3 of them unscored, in 130 minutes, and Calculations has 26 questions, 2 of them unscored, in 110 minutes. You need 70% on each portion, and unused time doesn't carry over between them.
As many times as you need, according to TDLR, and you pay PSI's $78 retake fee each time. You have one year from the date TDLR receives your application to meet every requirement, including passing the exam.
