Linemen install and repair the conductors strung between substations and customers and train through a separate line-worker apprenticeship. Substation electricians work inside the fenced yard and control house on the transformers, switchgear, and relay systems—not on the lines themselves. And unlike a general inside electrician wiring buildings at 120–600 volts, substation electricians routinely work around medium- to extra-high-voltage equipment where the margin for error is far smaller.
Substation work builds on a standard electrical foundation and adds high-voltage specialization. Most electricians reach it after an apprenticeship and a journeyman license—the same path that takes roughly four to five years.
